Nenana, Alaska

This Alaskan town of about 400 residents is situated at the confluence of the Nenana and Tanana Rivers. It's at mile 304.5 of the Parks Highway and is also a stop on the Alaska Railroad.

Nenana Ice Classic

Nenana may be most famous as the home of the annual Nenana Ice Classic. The Ice Classic is a betting pool on when the ice in the Tanana River with break up in the spring. Movement of the ice is measured by placing a tripod on the river, seen in the photo above at left (painted black and white). Participants purchase tickets with which they attempt to guess the correct day and minute that the ice will move. The 2009 jackpot was over $280,000.
